“Today, our social care system cares for over a million people… but the system is clearly under pressure. And this, in turn, puts pressure on our NHS.” – Chancellor Philip Hammond
The CQC’s 2017 report on the state of social care in England called the adult care system “one of the greatest unresolved public policy issues of our time”. As local councils struggle to fund appropriate care for vulnerable adults, a lack of capacity in the system is have a negative effect on the NHS as delayed transfers lead to bed blocking and cancelled operations.
In January 2017, 75 organisations wrote to Prime Minister Theresa May calling for cross-party talks to find a long term solution to the crisis in social care. The intervention comes have a series of commissions, consultations and white papers have failed to put the care system of a sustainable footing.
Recognising the pressure being placed on social care, the Government has pledged £2 billion of grant funding and announced plans to clarify its policies by publishing a green paper on the future of the system.
