Support with the Mental Capacity Act and Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards

johnJohn Leighton joins us on secondment from Cambridgeshire County Council where he is the Mental Capacity Act Training Manager and is also part of the team that implements the Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards for Cambridgeshire.

John’s role is to work with us and the Social Care Institute of Excellence (SCIE) to further the implementation of the Mental Capacity Act in care settings. The MCA is the key piece of legislation related to care practices and really helps us to understand and uphold the rights of people in care.

John’s background has mainly been in Adult Mental Health, though he has worked extensively with people with learning disabilities, asylum seekers and older people. He was been an area manager with the Mental Health Charity Rethink and has held the registered manager position, managing care homes for people with a chronic alcohol addiction and mental health difficulties for St Mungo’s.

John has devised and delivered extensive training in the Mental Capacity Act and acts as an expert ‘resource’ for all health and social care providers in Cambridgeshire. He is particularly interested in the practical application of the Mental Capacity Act and how to assess capacity and make best interests decisions in practice. If you have a question on the MCA or a situation you would like to talk through, John would be really pleased to hear from you…
